Abstract:
The place of the public enterprises in Nigeria
could not be overlooked. But, the question remains,
are these enterprises achieving the objectives for which
they are set up. A critical look m1 this area shows
3 that these organizations perform below expectations as
a result of certain problems which militate against
their efforts Various forms of management problems
encountered by them are enumerated in this study.
Data for this work was got £31m1'reviewing the
past work done in this area, personal observation and
mostly from answers to the interview questionnaires
filled by the management and staff of the two companies
studied, The study is undertaken on the basis of
hypotheses built around factors capable of influencing
the management of government owed enterprises. A
critical- analysis of data finding the Chi-Square(X2) distribution resulted into arriving at some definite
Conclusion. These enterprises have been hood with the
problem of quality and method of selection of personnel,
placement on the Job, compensation and promotion of staff
as nell as exertion of control over decision making by
the government. However, there are other management
problems facing the companies.
Finally, from the findings, conclusion and
recommendations were made on how to tackle these
problems and some areas of further researches stated.
